Alasdair Son of Great Colla

Alasdair Mac Colla Ghasta

Another hero who deserves a mention here, is Alasdair Mac Colla Chiotaich MacDhòmhnaill (Sir Alexander MacDonald) 1610–1647, who earned the nickname 'Fear thollaidh nan taighean' (the destroyer of houses) for the destruction he caused the Campbells in Argyll.

The Campbells had gained the upper hand over the MacDonalds and taken over much of their land.

Alasdair Mac Colla fled to Ireland before returning to seek revenge on the Campbells.

Perhaps you know the famous song Alasdair Mhic Colla Ghasta which was made as a tribute to Alasdair Mac Colla.

It can be heard here in traditional style.
