The Solar System (Family of the Sun)

Teaghlach na Grèine

We call our own solar system Teaghlach na Grèine.

The Sun is at the centre of the solar system and the (Latin) name of our sun is Sol.

Tha meud a' chriosa–ghrèine fhèin doirbh a chreidsinn, gun luaidh air fànas domhain.

Tha an dealbh seo shuas a' sealltainn nam planaidean agus a' ghrian aig a' mheud cheart a rèir a chèile, ach tha an t–astar eatarra doirbh a chur an cèill.

Nam biodh a' ghrian meatair gu leth an trast–tomhas, bhiodh An Talamh mun aon mheud ri marbhal, mu cheudameatair an trast–tomhas, agus 176 meatair air falbh bhon ghrèin.

Ach airson Neaptun a chur ri seo, bhiodh e 3.5 mìle air falbh bhon ghrèin agus beagan nas lugha na ball teanais!

English

It is hard to imagine the size of the solar system itself, let alone deep space.

This picture above shows the planets and the sun at the correct size relative to each other, but the distance between them is difficult to express.

If the sun were a meter and a half in diameter, the Earth would be about the same size as a marble, about a centimetre in diameter, and 176 meters away from the sun.

But to add Neptune to this, it would be 3.5 miles away from the sun and slightly smaller than a tennis ball!

BBC Bitesize has a section about the planets.

It's well worth taking a look when you have a moment.
