Darker

Duibhead na h–oidhche

In Gaelic we are able to use a noun form of an adjective: an ceum buadhach (the qualitative degree).

We have previously seen the most common examples: feabhas and miosad

These are a bit like the English 'goodness' and 'badness', nouns formed from adjectives.

While we can technically use most adjectives in this way, this is not overly common.

Some examples you may hear are given in the table above/earlier.

There are generally two main ways to use these, either as a noun describing the qualities of something:

gilead an t–sneachda.
the whiteness of the snow.
tighead nam ballachan.
the thickness of the walls.

Or we can use these with the verb rach to describe things becoming more 'white' or 'thick' (‘going in whiteness, in thickness’):

Chaidh na sgòthan an gilead às dèidh na stoirme.
The clouds became more white after the storm.
Thèid an glaodh an tighead mar as motha a mheasgaicheas tu i.
The paste will become more thick the more you mix it.

The above examples could also be written by using the verb fàs and a comparative adjective:

Dh'fhàs na sgòthan nas gile às dèidh na stoirme.
The clouds became more white after the storm.
Fàsaidh an glaodh nas tighe mar as motha a mheasgaicheas tu i.
The paste will become more thick the more you mix it.

How would you recast these sentences using a' cheum bhuadhach instead of fàs ?

Fàsaidh na h–oidhcheannan nas duibhe aig an àm seo den bhliadhna.
The nights get darker at this time of year.
Dh'fhàs a ghlùin na bu mhotha an dèidh dha a goirteachadh.
His knee got bigger after he injured it.
Tha mo bhrù a' fàs nas lugha a chionn 's gu bheil mi air daithead.
My belly is getting smaller because I'm on a diet.

Agus seo dhut na freagairtean!
