The book Window to the West: Culture and Environment in the Scottish Highlands, written by Meg Bateman and John Purser, asks the question if there is anything special about the way in which the Gaels through the ages looked at the world.
The authors reflected and pondered on vision, colours, language, and forms and shapes/features that can be seen in the art, buildings, stone carvings and manuscripts of the Gaels.
They believe that there a continuity can be observed among the Gaels that has shaped and is shaped by basic ideas about the position of human beings in the environment, the nature of time and the relationship between spiritual things and physical things.
