Here you go, Rona.  They’ll make a great soup. There’s goodness in cabbage.  I don’t think it gets the respect its due!

RONA: Chan eil mi a' smaoineachadh gun do rinn mo mhàthair brot a-riamh gun càl a chur ann. Tha am fàileadh a' tighinn gu mo chuimhne a cheart cho math ris a' bhlas. Agus ’s e deagh chòcaire a th' innte.

I don’t think my mother ever made soup without putting cabbage into it.  The smell reminds me of it as much as the taste.  And she’s a great cook.

SEONAG: Chan fhaicear air a' chlàr-bìdh agamsa ach “ith e no fàg e!”

All you can see on my menu is “eat it or leave it!”

RONA:  Mòran taing a Sheonag. Tha an fheadhainn a tha a' frithealadh a' bhanca-bìdh a' dèanamh feum dhen ghlasraich agaibh. ’S e deagh thaic a th' ann.

RONA: Tha, tha sinn mar choimhearsnachd bheag a' cumail sùil air a chèile.

Yes, we’re like a small community keeping an eye on each other.

SEONAG: Sin facal nach eil a' falbh às na naidheachdan.  Cluinnear “a' choimhearsnachd siud ’s a' choimhearsnachd seo”… ach tha e gu math eadar-dhealaichte bhon rud a bha coimhearsnachd a' ciallachadh nuair a bha mise a' fàs suas.

These are words that are never out of  

the news.  You’ll hear community this and community that… but it’s very different from what community meant when I was growing up. 

RONA: Bha deagh choimhearsnachd san sgìre againne. Tha a' chùis fhathast mar sin san Òban, far a bheil mo phàrantan a' fuireach.

There was a great community in my district.  It’s still like that in Oban, where my parents live.

SEONAG: Chan eil sin fìor sa h-uile sgìre. Chante gun robh an sgoil aig cridhe na coimhearsnachd, agus an latha a dh'fhalbhadh an sgoil nach biodh coimhearsnachd ann. Ach, tha àiteachan ag atharrachadh – feumaidh iad.

That’s not true in every area. They used to say that the school was at the heart of the community, and the day the school went there would no longer be a community.  But places have changed – they have to.

RONA: Tha mi a' smaoineachadh gum biodh e fìor a ràdh gu robh an eaglais cudromach cuideachd.

I think it would be true to say that that church was important as well.

SEONAG: Tha mi creidsinn gu bheil na taighean-seinnse agus fiù ’s an talla spòrs aig cridhe coimhearsnachd chuid an-diugh!

But I suppose the pubs and even the gyms are the heart of the community today!

RONA: Tha e nas duilghe coimhearsnachd a bhith agad sa bhaile mhòr ’s tu air do chuartachadh le coigrich.

It’s more difficult to have a community in the city when you’re surrounded by strangers.

SEONAG: Uill, chithear ceàrnaidhean a tha mar bhailtean beaga am broinn baile mòr. Chan fheum mi fhìn a dhol fada bhon doras a-muigh agam airson tadhal air bùithtean beaga, fiù ’s cafaidh no dhà. Agus aithnichidh mi mo nàbaidhean. ‘’S e coimhearsnachd thlachdmhor a th' innte.

Well you see areas that are like small towns in a large city. I don’t have to go far from my front door to visit small shops, or even a café or two.  I know my neighbours.  It’s a pleasant community.

RONA: Tha mise nas eòlaiche air cuid san ionad  na tha mi air mo nàbaidhean.

I know some who work in the hub better than I know my neighbours.

SEONAG: Feuch nach sàraich thu thu fhèin. Chan eil sìon ach obair math dhut!

Make sure you don’t exhaust yourself.  Nothing but work isn’t good for you!

RONA: Cha bhruich an càl leis fhèin!

The cabbage won't boil itself!
