Ceòl is Òrain

Music and Songs

Tha ceòl is òrain aig cridhe dualchas nan Gàidheal agus tha a’ Ghàidhlig aithnichte mar chànan brèagha bàrdail. Ach bha fhios agad air a seo, mar-thà!

Le bàrdachd aig cridhe a’ chultair, tha ceanglaichean làidir eadar òrain air an seinn agus puirt air a’ phìob, air an fhidhill agus air a’ chlàrsaich.

Cluinnear ceòl is òrain aig iomadh tachartas ann an Alba fhèin agus air feadh an t-saoghail le fèill-mhòr air cuid de na h-òrain, leithid puirt à beul, òrain obrach (le òrain luaidh agus òrain bhleoghainn nam measg), òrain mholaidh agus òrain tàlaidh.

‘S ann tro bheul-aithris a bha òrain agus puirt air an toirt seachad tro na bliadhnaichean agus gu fortanach bha na h-òrain air an glèidheadh thar nan linntean.

Mar bu trice, bhiodh òrain Ghàidhlig ag innse sgeulachdan agus bhiodh iad ceangailte ris a’ choimhearsnachd às an tàinig iad.

Music and songs are at the heart of Gaelic heritage and Gaelic is known as a beautiful poetic language. But you knew that already!

With poetry at the heart of the culture, there are strong links between songs which are sung and tunes on the pipe, the fiddle and the harp.

Music and songs can be heard at many events in Scotland itself and all over the world with some of the songs being very popular, such as puirt à beul (mouth music), work songs (including waulking songs and milking songs), praise songs and lullabies.

It was through oral tradition that songs and tunes were handed down over the years and fortunately the songs were preserved over the centuries.

Usually, Gaelic songs told stories and were connected to the community where they originated.
