Somhairle MacGill-Eain

Gaelic

Gun teagamh, b' e Somhairle MacGill-Eain am bàrd Gàidhlig a bu chudromaiche a bha beò san fhicheadamh linn.

Tha a chuid bhàrdachd aithnichte air feadh an t-saoghail.

Thug Somhairle ath-bheothachadh air bàrdachd na Gàidhlig, a' togail air bunaitean dùthchasach, ach a' cur bàrdachd Ghàidhlig air adhart ann an co-theacsa Eòrpach agus eadar-nàiseanta.

Bha comas aig Somhairle ruitheam agus fuaimneachadh na Gàidhlig a dhèanamh tarraingeach do dhaoine aig nach eil a' Ghàidhlig, agus bha comas aige cuspairean Gàidhealach agus cuspairean mòra poilitigeach na Roinn Eòrpa fhighe còmhla.

Gu dearbh, bha e a' faicinn eachdraidh nan Gàidheal ann an co-theacsa eaconamach, Eòrpach agus co-theacsa na h-Ìmpireachd Breatannaiche.

Tha an t-uabhas de bhàrdachd ri fhaighinn air Somhairle MacGill-Eain Air-loidhne:

Somhairle MacLean was unquestionably the most important Gaelic poet in the twentieth century.

His poetry is recognised all over the world.

Somhairle revived Gaelic poetry, building on traditional foundations, but promoting Gaelic poetry in a European and international context.

Somhairle had the ability to make the rhythm and sound of Gaelic appealing to people who do not speak Gaelic, and he had the ability to weave together Gaelic themes and the great political themes of Europe.

Indeed, he saw the history of the Gàidheil in an economic and European context, and also in the context of the British Empire.
